When working with addiction and other forms of compulsive behavior, I meet people exactly where they’re at. Some people are very clear that they have a "problem.” Others are less certain, and need time to explore their relationship to the substance(s) or behavior(s) that brought them into therapy.
I’ve received extensive training in both Harm Reduction and Abstinence-Based treatment models. I use a strengths-based, non-shaming approach to help people clarify, for themselves, whether or not they want to modify their behavior in any way. My style can either be “soft” or highly directive: I tailor it to the unique needs of each client.
This work can be extremely transformative. People who struggle with addiction often feel “defective” or “irreparably damaged.” Finding a safe, supportive place to talk openly about things that make us feel “defective,” can be a powerful first step in working through underlying shame that frequently drives addictive, compulsive behaviors.
