When working with addiction and other forms of compulsive behavior, I meet people exactly where they’re at. Some people are very clear that they have a "problem.” Others are less certain, and need time to explore their relationship to whatever substance(s) or behavior(s) brought them into therapy.
I’ve received extensive training in both Harm Reduction and Abstinence-Based treatment models. I use a strengths-based, non-shaming approach to help people clarify, for themselves, whether or not they want to modify their behavior in any way. My style can either be “soft” or highly directive: I tailor it to the unique needs of each client.
This work can be extremely transformative. People who struggle with addiction often feel “defective” or “irreparably damaged.” Finding a safe, supportive place to talk openly about things that make us feel “defective,” can be a powerful first step in working through underlying shame that frequently drives addictive, compulsive behaviors.
